Our History

In 1942, BOPEU was founded as the Bechuanaland Protectorate Junior Civil Service Association.

1942

The Trade Union and Trade Dispute Proclamation legalized Unions in the Protectorate era.

1942

The Francistown African Employees Union (FAEU) formed in 1948, though it later collapsed.

1948

BCSA transitioned into the Botswana Civil Servants Association during the 1990s.

1990s

Merged into the Bechuanaland Civil Service Association, uniting black Batswana and European workers.

First committee members led the association from Independence Day to localize top office positions.

First Committee

Led by Tsiripo Gare, Gobe Matenge, Bahiti Temane, and David Magang.

Following self-governance, many BCSA members rose to become prominent government leaders.

First Constitution

Adopted from England through Unison, marking a pivotal regulatory milestone.

In 2007, BCSA officially transformed into BOPEU, the Union of Choice.

2007

BOPEU's active labor involvement predates the nation's independence in 1966.

1966

BCSA achieved formal recognition as a fully-fledged Trade Union.

Today, BOPEU organizes over 36,000 members nationwide from Government and affiliated sectors.
